On Li-ion Battery Recycling

You might have heard the claim, “EV batteries can’t be recycled”, but they can be. In fact, as the number of EVs increases, so too has the availability of recyclable material. McKinsey projects material availability to grow 25% annually, with production wastage likely accounting for the majority of recyclable material available this decade. This shouldn't come as a surprise - battery replacement rates are extremely low, as we wrote recently.

Material recovery rates are high too, with a 95% materials recovery rate being frequently cited by those doing it. So who is doing it, then? Here’s a near-alphabetical listing of just some of the companies engaged in Li-ion battery recycling right now:

  • 4R Energy
  • Accurec Recycling
  • American Battery Technology Company
  • Aqua Metals
  • Befesa
  • CATL
  • Cirba Solutions
  • Duesenfeld
  • Ecobat
  • Elemental Group
  • Fortum
  • GEM
