Increase in VAT on Electric

Increase in VAT on Electric

On May 1, 2022, VAT on electric decreased from 13.5% to 9%. On May 1, 2025, it's set to increase back to 13.5%. So what does this mean for charging costs?

Current kWh Price

(inc. 9% VAT)

New kWh Price

(inc. 13.5% VAT)

Increase per kWh
€0.10 €0.1041 €0.0041
€0.20 €0.2083 €0.0083
€0.30 €0.3124 €0.0124
€0.40 €0.4165 €0.0165
€0.50 €0.5206 €0.0206
€0.60 €0.6248 €0.0248
€0.70 €0.7289 €0.0289

So, in general, we would expect this increase in VAT to result in an increase of €0.01 per kWh at home, & €0.02 to €0.03 per kWh at public chargers. With a typical EV requiring 15 - 20kWh of charging per 100km, this would indicate an additional €0.15 - €0.20 per 100km when charged at home, & €0.30 - €0.60 per 100km when using a public charger.

We have below applied the increase in VAT to the current pricing of a number of different plans to estimate what their new kWh pricing can be anticipated to be from May 1. Though again, these are estimates, the majority of charge point operators & domestic energy providers have yet to announce revised pricing.

One who has announced upcoming price changes is IONITY, with increases attributed to the VAT increase resulting in a €0.02/kWh increase to Passport Power, & €0.03/kWh increase to Passport Motion pricing. No change however has been announced for Direct (Pay As You Go) pricing to date.

We'll keep you updated on actual price changes as they get announced.
