Geneva Motor Show 2014

As we posted recently, the new Nissan e-NV200 has debuted at the 2014 Geneva motor show which is taking place this week, it is based largely on the same technology as the EURO Leaf, with superior regenerative braking taking into account it’s likely use being in an urban delivery role.

The e-NV200 has a 24kwh battery pack with an NEDC rated 170km range. It will be available in both commercial and 5 seater passenger versions with the commercial version having a cargo volume of 4.2m^3 or “two standard Euro pallets”

In addition to this new Nissan, there are several concept Electric Vehicles on show, including;

This concept vehicle with it’s 6.6 foot long Gull wing doors, promises 644hp delivered through 4 electric motors, one for each wheel, delivering 0 to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds and onwards to a top speed of over 236MPH. They say it will have a total range of up to 373 miles and be available by 2015.

The most interesting part is the claims regarding the battery technology in use, which “works like a combination of a battery and a fuel cell using liquid electrolyte

This is a 6-seater concept MPV from the Volkswagen Group design house Giugiaro has 2 electric motors, delivery a combined power of 299hp with up to 540km.

The doors alone on this concept deserve some attention, looking like something from a Transformers movie in mid transformation.

The car is also packed with technology with an 11-inch touchscreen centre console and 4 iPads mounted into the headrests.

Looking at more realistic near-term expectations, the Kia Soul EV was also debuted in Geneva this week. This is a conversion of the existing Soul ICE vehicle with some styling and feature adjustments for the new EV model, including a full LED instrument cluster.

It has a 27kwh battery pack, 6.6kw on-board charger and can also use DC fast charging with an expected range of around 200km.

One innovative feature of the Soul is the air-conditioning system, which can recycle waste heat from the electrical components and also smart air intake control which allows to heat only the driver’s area rather than the entire vehicle.

The Kia Soul is expected to begin production in the second half of 2014.
