H1 2024: Passenger Cars

New plug-in vehicle registrations amounted to 22.7% for the first half of the year, comprised of:

• 10,747 (13.6%) BEVs, &;
• 7,169 (9.1%) PHEVs.

Additional registrations from used imports in the period amounted to:

• 815 BEVs, &;
• 4,048 PHEVs.

Clearly BEVs have fallen out of favour with buyers so far this year, with the number of new units registered decreasing 3,560 units (-24.9%) v. H1 2023. Used imports too have decreased, albeit to a lesser extent (-16.3%).

The top 5 most-registered new BEVs for H1 2024 were the:

1. Volkswagen ID.4;
2. Tesla Model Y;
3. Tesla Model 3;
4. Hyundai Kona, &;
5. MG MG4.

PHEVs however, continued to improve in popularity, with the number of new PHEVs increasing by 918 units (+14.7%) v. H1 2023, while used imports almost doubled (+91.7%).

The top 5 most-registered new PHEVs for H1 2024 were the:

1. Hyundai Tucson;
2. Ford Kuga;
3. KIA Sportage;
4. BMW 5 Series, &;
5. Volvo XC60.

H1 2024: Commercial

Both light and heavy commercial vehicle registrations are dominated by diesel. The number of plug-in light commercial vehicles registered increased modestly (+7.2%) to 480 v. H1 2023’s 448, with the Maxus eDeliver 3 being the most popular.

Heavy commercial vehicles significantly increased to 229 units in H1 2024, accounting for 9.9% of all heavy commercial vehicles registered. These almost entirely (216 units) relate to buses from Wrightbus & Alexander Dennis.

June 2024

Looking at just this past month, new plug-in vehicle registrations amounted to 53.5% in June, comprised of:

• 692 (46.2%) BEVs, &;
• 110 (7.3%) PHEVs.

Additional registrations from used imports accounted for a further:

• 108 BEVs, &;
• 605 PHEVs.

The top 3 most-registered BEVs in June were the:

1. Tesla Model 3
2. Tesla Model Y
3. Volkswagen ID.4

As with May, the ever decreasing number of registrations pre-242 licence plates also resulted in the Teslas being the top 2 most registered vehicles this month regardless of fuel type.
